Clinical Application of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Culture and Expansion

  • Chapter
Advances in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 101))

Abstract

The tremendous amplification inherent in hematopoietic development in vivo has long tantalized clinician scientists with the notion that this physiology could be harnessed for clinical application. In these scenarios, ex vivo culture of hematopoietic cells could be employed for the generation of myeloid and lymphoid cells of various maturities and degrees of modifications, ranging from amplified stem cells to transfusion doses of mature red blood cells and platelets. Over the past decade, advances in our understanding of hematopoietic physiology have allowed investigators to begin to address these issues, and clinical trials are beginning to explore these possibilities.
