Abstract
Supply chain management, which is about the management of the material and information flows in multi-stage production-distribution networks, has recently attracted much attention from academics and practitioners alike. Driven by fierce global competition and enabled by advanced information technology, many companies have taken initiatives to revamp their supply chains in order to reduce costs and at the same time increase responsiveness to changes in the marketplace. A remarkable success story is Wal-Mart, whose replenishment practices are hailed as the center piece of its competitive strategy.
