Abstract
Manufacturing and retail companies, particularly those in North America, Europe and Japan, are moving towards global sourcing of their raw materials, components, and finished goods. Automobile firms were some of the initiators of this trend, followed by tool, steel and machinery companies such as Caterpillar, which currently sources products throughout Europe and North America. Still more recently apparel retailers have followed suit. Nike and Hush Puppies source products from Asia; in 1998 Laura Ashley announced plans to sell its European plants and do the same.
