Abstract
Although it often seems like larval marine fish are programmed to die, they actually are programmed to live and try very hard to do so. They can succeed if not overwhelmed by individual defects or environmental and nutritional handicaps. In raising marine fish, we hope to simulate the best conditions that nature could provide and sometimes have an opportunity to do better, but more often, compromises must be made because of siting, engineering, or economic constraints.
