Ultrastructural Changes in Dementing Illnesses

Part of the book series: Cerebral Cortex ((CECO,volume 14))

Abstract

Dementia is an organic mental disorder characterized by a general loss of intellectual abilities involving impairment of memory, judgment, and abstract thinking, as well as changes in personality. Because conditions that can cause dementia frequently exhibit characteristic pathological profiles in the brain that can only be adequately detected by electron microscopy (EM), EM has made and is expected to continue making conspicuous contributions to our understanding of the neuropathologies of such conditions. Although there are a lot of dementia-causing illnesses (Tomlinson, 1992), in this review we confine ourselves to typical dementing diseases in which ultrastructural brain changes, both intraneuronal and interstitial, have been intensively investigated.
