Environmental Risk Factors in Oppositional-Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder

  • Chapter
Handbook of Disruptive Behavior Disorders

Abstract

More than 10 years ago, Farrington (1986) concluded his review of the sociocultural context of childhood disorders by stating that there was a clear correlation between the sociocultural environment in which children are raised and antisocial behavior such as delinquency and Conduct Disorder (CD). Farrington focused on social class, ethnic background, the peer group, and the neighborhood, but other social and familial factors might equally have been included. Many if not most psychosocial environmental risk factors for antisocial behavior have been identified for some time. As Farrington pointed out, what remains to be described are the causal relationships among these risk factors and outcomes to address the question “What leads to what?” This endeavor is no less relevant today.
