Development of Portable Shelf Sea Models for Massively Parallel Machines

Abstract

A major challenge in the effective management and protection of coastal marine environments is the ability to both understand and predict the various processes which characterise the behaviour of these regions. Realistic numerical models of shelf sea areas provide powerful tools which can play a central role in these efforts. A project currently underway at Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory is the development of a three dimensional coupled hydrodynamic-ecological model which will span the full North West European continental shelf, including the entire coastline of Britain.
