Abstract

An 82-year-old man was admitted to the University Hospital in November 1994 for the treatment of multiple widespread painful ulcerations over the upper and lower extremities that had been present for about 5 years. A diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis was made at that time according to American Rheumatism Association criteria, namely morning stiffness, chronic pain on motion with swelling of many joints, including the proximal small joints of the hands, wrists, and elbows and a positive rheumatoid factor. He had no signs of systemic changes except polyneuropathy.
