Abstract

The European beaver, Castor fiber, was native to Austria. However, beavers were completely extirpated from Austria in the 1860s. In the 1970s and 1980s beavers were reintroduced to Austria along the Danube River east of Vienna. This east Austrian population has grown and spread. Smaller populations also exist in northern and western Austria. Current population estimates are approximately 800 animals in the eastern population and 200 animals in the western population. There are also 15 smaller groups scattered in other parts of the country. The growth in numbers and geographic spread of beavers in Austria have produced some conflict between beavers and humans. Scientifically sound management is necessary to ensure the conservation of beavers in Austria.
