Abstract

The importance of comparing the confidence intervals of group means at the end of an analysis of variance has been emphasized in section 12.8. The overall significance test done in an analysis of variance (section 12.6) indicates whether there are conclusive differences between group means but reveals neither the nature nor the extent of those differences. Therefore, the inspection of a series of confidence intervals, such as illustrated in figure 12.8.1,is very useful from a descriptive point of view.
