Abstract
Tests of goodness of fit are one particular instance of the methods applied to the analysis of frequency tables in chapter 15. Tests of goodness of fit may be used to check the hypothesis that a continuous or discontinuous variate X follows a specified theoretical probability distribution such as the normal distribution (chapter 5), the lognormal distribution (chapter 14), the binomial distribution (chapter 17), or the Poisson distribution (chapter 18). The frequency table analyzed in a test of goodness of fit is a one-way table if the distribution is univariate, but it becomes a two-way or a multi-way table if the distribution is bivariate or multivariate, such as the bivariate (chapter 19) or the trivariate (chapter 23) normal distribution.
