Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to review the nature of depression in adolescents and to discuss the empirical validation of a psychosocial treatment for the disorder, Interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed adolescents (IPT-A) is the treatment of focus. The empirical work to be discussed includes epidemiological research on rates of depression in children and adolescents, and results from an open and randomized controlled clinical trial of IPT-A. An overview of the principles and techniques of IPT-A is provided and the work is viewed in the context of changing practices in the delivery of mental health care today.
