During the last fifteen years it became evident that Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) encompassing more than three rings despite their low water solubility may serve as growth substrates for several kinds of soil bacteria.

Mycobacterium sp. strain KR20 was isolated from a PAH contaminated soil of a former gasworks by its ability to utilise fluoranthene as sole source of carbon and energy. Five novel fluoranthene metabolites were isolated and identified from fluoranthene grown cultures of this isolate, namely cis-2,3-fluoranthene dihydrodiol, z-9-carboxymethylenefluorene-2-carboxylic acid, cis-1,9a-dihydroxy-l-hydrofluoren-9-one-8-carboxylic acid, 4-hydroxy-benzochromene-6-one-7-carboxylic acid, and benzene-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid. They possibly indicate a novel metabolic pathway for the bacterial metabolisation of fluoranthene.
