Abstract
The ratio of water to dry matter in fresh millable cane is about 2.5 to 1, the total fresh weight consisting of more than 70% of water. 1 For each part of dry matter produced, the plant is estimated as having absorbed some 250 parts of water. Van Dillewijn says that experimental data range broadly from 200 to 300 parts. On the basis of 250 parts of water being consumed per part of dry matter, a crop of 100 tc/ha would consume approximately 7.5 million litres of water, or 750 mm/ha
