Abstract

The light actinides show a variety of lattice effects that do not normally appear in other regions of the periodic table. Following the pioneering work of Johansson and his collaborators (Johansson et al., 1981) we know that these effects arise from interactions involving the 5f electrons. Progress in theory is bringing these effects within the range of detailed theoretical calculation: we have prepared this article to summarize the experimental situation.
