Abstract
Reductionism, to us, means the attempt to explain the unknown receptaculitids by reducing them to a known taxon. In using this methodology (not philosophy) we paraphrase Karl R. Popper (1982:132) by asking whether we can reduce, or hope to reduce, receptaculitids to sponges, to algae, or to any other taxon. Or simply put, can we identify the unknown with the known?
