Abstract
The basic design of the European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR), which began in February 1995, was completed in June 1997. Electricité de France, the participating German utilities, Framatome, Siemens, and Nuclear Power International (NPI), a joint subsidiary of Framatome and Siemens, then decided to engage an additional design phase: the basic design optimization phase. Started in June 1997, this phase will end in December 1998. The status of the project is summarized hereunder.
