Coupling Wetlands Structure and Function: Developing a Condition Index for Wetlands Monitoring

  • Chapter
Ecological Indicators

Abstract

Ecosystem management has historically been based on benchmark studies of the natural landscape from which management decisions and mitigation measures have been developed (McHarg, 1969). This impact assessment approach often does not maximize the use of knowledge previously gained to predict future conditions. Consequently, an approach based on what we call a condition index is offered as an alternative.
