Abstract
Much of the landscape in the United States has been converted from a natural ecosystem to one more noted and valued for its cultural aspects. This conversion began with the arrival of the Europeans 400 years ago, and it is often referred to as the “process of development.” This development has created a landscape that is now highly valued for its economic yield and its distinctive, though certainly not natural, character (Victoria Department of Water Resources, 1989).
