Abstract

The higher a manager climbs up the organizational ladder, the greater is the need for him (her) to engage in what were described in the last chapter as unstructured decisions. Senior managers are less likely to encounter problems with high levels of replication and frequency, which call for programmed decisions, than their junior colleagues. At the top of the organization problems rarely replicate the past, they are often ill defined, they are involved with a degree of uncertainty and are associated with ambiguous objectives, and even the constraints under which the enterprise has to operate are not always easily defined.
