Abstract
In early February 1988, Ford Motor Company announced that it was withdrawing from South Africa.1 The announcement was a long time in the making. The previous two years had seen almost a stampede of American companies leaving South Africa through closures, sales of assets, and a variety of other means. Quite often, these divestitures caused significant losses to the American parents when measured against the value of the companies’ assets in South Africa.
