Abstract

The demographic transition observed in developed market economies and increasingly also in emerging countries leads to a rapidly growing proportion of old and very old citizens. In European countries, the absolute number of citizens aged 80 or over has multiplied by a factor of 5 since 1950. Healthy aging and preserving autonomy and quality of life into very old age will be the leading health issue in the 21st century.
