Neuropsychological Assessment and Intervention with Asian Americans

Handbook of Cross-Cultural Neuropsychology

Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Neuropsychology ((CINP))

Abstract

The relative lack of serious consideration of cultural variables as a relevant factor in neuro-psychology has led to a shortage of adequate knowledge and skills necessary for a viable cross-cultural neuropsychology (Ardila, 1995; Ardila, Rosselli, & Puente, 1994; Wong, Strickland, Fletcher-Janzen, Ardila, & Reynolds, Chapter 1, this volume). This has become even more apparent in recent years, as practitioners are being asked more frequently to evaluate patients who are of different ethnic, cultural, or language backgrounds than themselves, and are finding few resources to aid them. Clinical neuropsychologists, in particular, rely heavily on tests and procedures that are standardized and validated in order to reliably assess neuro-cognitive and neurobehavioral function, yet they find few such instruments available to evaluate the culturally dissimilar patient. However, assessment at some level must proceed. Though it is clear that, ultimately, more systematic research in cross-cultural neuropsychology is necessary (Ardila, 1995) as our society becomes more culturally and ethnically diverse, the immediacy of the clinical neuropsychologist’s need for increased understanding and direction in this domain becomes more acute.
