Abstract

Crisis theory has taught us that people who have been through a horrific event such as a plane crash, fire, or other disaster have a natural need to share their experiences and emotions with one another after it is over (see, for instance, Butcher&Maudal, 1976; Caplan, 1961,1964). This natural process of social care and support is also known as the recoil phase (Tyhurst, 1951). It is thought that most crisis reactions are transitory and that a crisis is resolved within 6 to 8 weeks, either normally or into a pathological form (Bloom, 1963).
