The Ecology of Domestic Aggression toward Adult Victims

  • Chapter
Case Studies in Family Violence

Abstract

Interpersonal aggression may be the plague of the 1990s. We are assailed on a daily basis with media coverage of violent crime both within and outside familial relationships. We fear for our safety in airports, public buildings, and even schools. Perhaps the fact that societal aggression is often attributed to exposure to violence in the family of origin, or perhaps the efforts of the battered women’s movement to compel legislatures, the police, and the courts to treat violence against women as the serious crime that it is, have has an impact. Regardless of the reason, domestic violence has finally been recognized as one of the most serious problems afflicting society, and the resources devoted to understanding and treating it have increased dramatically.
