Abstract
The concept of managed care has rapidly changed the focus of American health-care funding. The population covered by managed health-care plans in the USA has grown in 20 years almost tenfold from 6 million in 1976 to 53 million in 1996. It is expected to grow to 103 million by the year 2000.1 In the 1998 Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, 81 papers dealt with managed care—a prevalence of papers which was more than half of those on psychotherapy or quality of care.
