Abstract

New technologies in underwater archaeology are most often tied to advances in oil and mineral exploration or anti-submarine warfare. In this chapter the universal challenges presented by the conduct of archaeology in underwater environments are discussed in relation to the latest advances in technology that might be applied to mitigate them. The prime problem areas addressed are positioning of the research vessel on the water, location and identification of submerged cultural resources on the seabed, techniques for documenting sites once they are found, and the generic issue of diving technology as applied to this field of underwater science. The author discusses technology transfer from the commercial and military sector, where it has been successful and where it needs improvement.
