WATiS — the Wadden Sea Information System Experience from an Operational System

  • Chapter
Climate and Environmental Database Systems

Abstract

The Wadden Sea is one of the rarest and relatively undisturbed nature systems in Europe. Its unique character, its enormous importance for keeping intact the habitats of vast numbers of biological species, and its fascinating landscape has led to considerable research and management efforts on national as well as international levels in order to assess environmental changes and to prevent irreversible damage as a result of human impact. Monitoring the Wadden Sea is based on ecosystemar approaches (Kellermann et al. 1994, TMEG 1993). Long term storage and the integration of interpretable information from various scientific disciplines is a key issue for an assessment of the status of the Wadden Sea.
