Abstract
Catalogue systems have been recognized as important tool to improve the exchange and make freely available scientific observations and results from the polar regions. The Directory Interchange Format (DIF) of the NASA Global Change Master Directory has been accepted as a common standard. A central master directory is being set up for the Antarctic. The Arctic scientific community relies on a decentralized system. In Germany a National Polar Directory supports the scientists, providing data set descriptions for the Polar directory systems.
