Summary

The focus of this study is on the support services offered by private and public institutions in Italy to small and medium-sized export firms. Previous research in this area has focused on the internationalization of Italian SMFs and the availability of export support services.

Sinceexporting is becoming moreand moreimportant for Italian firms generally it is timely to analyzeexportsupportand howeffective it is for small firms entering foreign markets. This chapter is basedon the evaluation by small firms of non-financial supportservices offered by private and publicinstitutions, using data from a survey of 116 exporting Italian SMFsassociated with export consortia. Aftera description of the characteristics of theSMFsinterviewed, the useand the helpfulness of support services are analyzed andconclusions offered.
