Management of Gastric Cancer

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 55))

Abstract

Carcinoma of the stomach is the eighth most common cause of cancer related deaths in the United States. It is the third most common gastrointestinal cancer (following colorectal and pancreatic cancer). The 5-year survival rate is dismal, being somewhere between 10 and 15%, as approximately 75% have advanced disease on diagnosis [1]. Clinical symptoms are typically vague and nonspecific. As a result, there is usually advanced disease when the patient seeks medical attention.
