Cancer of the cardia: The value of total extended esophago-gastrectomy

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 55))

Abstract

The cardia is defined as the orifice that communicates between the esophageal and gastric cavities [5,8,17,40,43,47,54], but rather than a true orifice, it is a 1–1.5 cm long tube limited craneally by the line of transition between the stratified squamous epithelium of the esophagus and the columnar epithelium of the stomach. The principal feature of this area is the presence of tubuloacinar glands distributed irregularly over a zone from 0.25 cm from the upper epithelial margin to 2 cm distally.
