Abstract

Radiation therapy is a highly effective treatment for malignant gliomas and there is good evidence that increasing radiation dose results in increased survival (1,2). However, damage to the surrounding normal tissue limits the total dose of radiation which can be delivered (3). Because CNS tumors rarely metastasize, local control in these devastating conditions can translate into cure. It was thought that interstitial brachytherapy might alleviate the problem of therapeutic ratio, yet it has become quite clear that radiation necrosis is the limiting factor for this technique as well (4).
