Abstract
Irradiation of tissues and cells can liberate arachidonic acid from the phospholipids, which can then be metabolized to prostaglandins (1,2). Also, whole body gamma irradiation of animals causes significant increases in the levels of the prostaglandins and other cyclooxygenase metabolites (3,4). The release of arachidonic acid may be caused by radiation induced activation of phospholipase A2 (2,5). Subsequent metabolism of arachidonic acid may be initiated by a radiation induced free radical mechanism and lipid peroxidation (2,5).
