Abstract
Gravity is an obvious and all-pervading background to our lives. At first sight, it also appears to be quite simple. As long as we confine our attention to a single geographic neighborhood, the Earth’s gravity can be represented by a uniform acceleration vector g. On an astronomical scale, however, gravity is not uniform, but obeys an inverse-square-distance law—the main new feature in what follows.
