Abstract
The preceding four chapters were a digression into the bulk properties of matter. We now return to single-particle mechanics in order to explore vibrational (or oscillatory) motion. The simplest kind of vibration, exemplified by a pure musical tone, is known as a harmonic oscillation. It is found in Nature, if one knows how to look (or listen), as an ingredient of nearly all vibrations—mechanical, electrical, or other. The next chapter will demonstrate its close connection with waves.
