Structural Features in Alkali-Metal Doped Conjugated Polymers

  • Chapter
Frontiers of Polymer Research

Abstract

Conducting complexes obtained by doping conjugated polymers with alkalimetal ions have channel structures. These structures are discussed using a basis set of simple motifs of alkali-metal ions surrounded by polymer chains, and are illustrated with examples from polyacetylene, poly(p-phenylene) and poly(p-phenylene vinylene). The diameter of the dopant-ion relative to the cross-sectional width of the host polymer determines whether the dopant-ion columns are formed in triangular (three chain) or tetragonal (four chain) channels. Staging observed at low dopant concentrations is shown to be analogous to that in graphite intercalation compounds. The implications of these structural features on the electrochemical curves obtained during doping and dedoping of polymers are discussed.
