Kinetics of Intermembrane Interactions Leading to Fusion

  • Chapter

Abstract

Fusion of membranes requires close apposition, destabilization and appropriate structural reorganizations leading to membrane mixing (Blumenthal, 1987). The time period between the application of the fusogen and the first indication of membrane mixing, i.e. the delay in fusion, may vary widely for different systems. In viral fusion it is in the range of hundreds of milliseconds to seconds and even minutes (Morris et al., 1989; Sarkar et al., 1989; Hoekstra et al., 1989; Claque et al., 1990). Delays in electrofusion can be as short as the time resolution of the currently used videomicroscopy method, which is tens of milliseconds, and as long as minutes (Dimitrov and Sowers, 1990a).
