Abstract
We use a rotational canonical coordinate to describe the physics of small Josephson tunnel junctions. This formulation is combined with a phenomenological damping term to allow dynamical simulations of quantum limited junctions. Our model incorporates the Coulomb blockade as well as the Josephson effects, and both single electron and pair tunneling events are accounted for. The simulations show the possible existence of chaotic dynamics due to competition between tunneling of single particles and pairs.
