Abstract
Smectic A connex droplets in Isotropic melt are frustrated systems. Frustration comes from two incompatible constraints : layer equidistance in the bulk and layer orientation perpendicular to the Smectic A-Isotropic interface. In a 2D model, this frustration is released in the S2 curved space. Uncurving S2 to R2, one finds back the bâtonnets and “zig-zag” shapes observed in thin samples.
