Abstract
How do particles arise in quantum field theories? The concept of particles is examined, and is related to specific forms for the interaction between the field and other localised forms of matter. For certain types of interaction, and more importantly, for studying specific interactions of the matter, it is shown that the quantum field can be regarded as though it were actually a quantum mechanics of particles.

A paper investigating the relation between such a non-linear quantum mechanics and the particle descrition of a non-linear field theory is at present in preperation.
