Diversity of Magnetic Crystals Found in Magnetotactic Bacteria

  • Chapter

Abstract

Since magnetotaxy was first described by Blakemore1 there were some descriptions about particular characteristics of different morphological species of magnetotactic bacteria, but always assuming single domain magnetic crystals of magnetite inside these bacteria1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Some works suggest a correlation between some crystal parameters (size, shape) and microorganisms morphology 7, 8, 9, although no systematic study have been done associating characteristical biomagnetic particles with a particular morphological specie of magnetotactic microorganism.
