Abstract
This paper* is divided into two distinct but interrelated parts. The first provides an overview of environmental research by the European Community concerning the genetic effects of environmental chemicals. The second part focusses on one particular coordinated project in this field; biomonitoring of human populations exposed to genotoxic environmental chemicals. As well as being one of the focal points of this EEMS meeting, this coordinated project is the latest addition to the EC R & D Programme and is a good example of collaborative European research.
