The Atmospheric Formation of Nitroarenes and Their Occurrence in Ambient Air

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Environmental Science Research ((ESRH,volume 40))

Abstract

Over the last six years research has been carried out at the Statewide Air Pollution Research Center concerning the gas-phase atmospheric reactions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (РАН) and their nitro-derivatives, as well as on the ambient concentrations of the РАН and nitroarenes. This research has involved kinetic and product studies of their atmospherically important gas-phase reactions,1–17 analytical methods development and field studies to determine their ambient concentrations,18–29 and studies of the synthesis, mutagenic activities and metabolism of nitroarenes.30–34 We present here a brief overview of this research as it relates to the atmospheric formation of nitroarenes and their occurrence in ambient air.
