Abstract

Final-state effects in deep-inelastic neutron scattering on liquid helium may be analyzed in terms of one- and two-body density matrix elements. We provide an analysis and discussion of the formal properties of the relevant two-body density matrix elements and consider their evaluation for a variational model within the correlated-basis framework. Numerical results have been obtained in the hypernetted-chain approximation ignoring elementary contributions. These results are compared with the predictions given by qualitative estimates of the two-body density matrix adopted in the theories of final-state interactions proposed by Silver and Gersch et al.
