Abstract

The presence of Kosterlitz-Thouless type resistive fluctuations and of non-linear currentvoltage relation in some of the high temperature superconductors suggests the presence of two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity. It is shown here that an array of 2D Josephson junctions can account for this behavior. The junctions exhibit an additional phase transition above which the layers are uncorrelated. The sesitivity of the latter transition to magnetic fields and the temerature dependence of the non-linear current-voltage relation are consistent with experimental data.
