Abstract
The “standard” many body description of nuclei is based on nonrelativistic potentials consistent with the observed nucleon-nucleon phase shifts. For over ten years the understanding of these “realistic” forces and the accuracy of calculations of ground state properties have been sufficient to establish that the standard description fails to reproduce the binding energy and density of nuclear matter, but does not fail by much. The contributions of S. Peiper and T. Dickhoff to this conference deal with the subject. In this talk we describe minimal phenomenological remedies for this failure and discuss their origin and consequences.
