Abstract
The term diabetes actually embraces a number of different disease processes characterized by chronically high blood glucose (BG) levels (Cox, Gonder-Frederick, Pohl, & Pennebaker, 1986). In the nondiabetic person, glucose metabolism is largely controlled by a feedback system between BG concentration and the beta cells of the pancreas that produce and release the hormone insulin. Insulin secretion lowers BG concentration by (1) allowing glucose to enter and be utilized by cells; (2) promoting glucose storage; and (3) inhibiting the release of stored glucose. This finely tuned system prevents BG levels from becoming abnormally high (hyperglycemia) or abnormally low (hypoglycemia), maintaining a relatively narrow homeostatic range between approximately 60 and 150 mg/dl.
