Abstract
The cardiovascular disorders, particularly hypertension and coronary heart disease, have received increased attention from the psychological community since the early 1970s (Shepherd & Weiss, 1987). Dissatisfaction with the psychoanalytically oriented “psychosomatic” approach to mind—body relationships prompted a “dissident” group of behavioral and biomedical scientists and clinicians to develop the concept of behavioral medicine to portray more accurately the interrelationship and interdependence of these two broad areas of inquiry in their efforts to understand, to treat, and ultimately to prevent the major chronic diseases of our time, for example, heart disease, cancer, and stroke(Schwartz & Weiss, 1978).
