Abstract

Older adults comprise the largest subgroup of patients seen in general medical settings. Yet, most health care professionals, including psychologists, have had little or no training in normal aging or in diseases that affect the aged. According to an American Psychological Association survey conducted in 1982, less than 5% of psychological services were delivered to elderly clients, and only a fraction of a percentage of psychologists in health settings reported a primary focus on aging (VandenBos & Stapp, 1983). This pattern is changing to a degree, through improvements in graduate curricula and in clinical experience provided by internship and postdoctoral programs. However, there continues to be a need to integrate expertise in rapidly growing subspecialties such as neuropsychology, health psychology, and behavioral medicine, with an understanding of the psychology of aging.
